Mentoring an A+ Attitude
Mentoring an A+ Attitude will serve the critical need for supervised, structured, high quality programming outside of the school hours for at-risk middle school youth in the City of Lorain. Family, economic and social stressors are abundant in the lives of our youth. These stressors often create barriers that impede them from attaining the necessary academics and life skills to become accomplished adults. Utilizing an already existing Athletic Club in Lorain, involvement of local veterans serving as mentors, academic tutoring, and fitness training, Mentoring an A+ Attitude will provide the support and guidance needed by these at-risk youth.
The program includes a 6-week Summer Camp for 24 middle school youth which is comprised of literacy based mentoring, academic tutoring, fitness training, and recreational activities with their veteran mentors.
A+ After School/Saturday Program
The school year program is designed for 48 middle school youth that will provide after-school and Saturday programming from September through May that include the same components as the Summer Camp. A+ After School will meet for 2 hours per day and be comprised of two 60 minute sessions. Intake questionnaires with students and parents will be used to identify areas of need. An individual student plan will be written with short term goals. This individual student plan will be reviewed with parents and students at the beginning, mid-way and at the conclusion of A+ After School in May.
Session A will be 60 minutes of tutoring under the guidance of trained tutors. Students will receive remediation in reading and/or mathematics as determined by need identified in pre-test results as well as homework assistance.
Session B will be 60 minutes of fitness and sport as determined by needs and interests of participants.
A+ Adventure Trip to Washington D.C.
Students who complete the A+ Summer Camp will participate in the A+ Adventure Trip to Washington D.C. for four days prior to returning to school. Through his contacts within the Marines and other Veterans groups, Alshi Williams will arrange for students to tour various government buildings to learn about our government, providing students with exposure to career choices and what it will take for them to become accomplished adults.
